CocoTaps founder and CEO Vincent Zaldivar, better known as CocoVinny knows a thing about turning setbacks into success. A few years ago CocoVinny took his idea for CocoTaps, a 100% made in the USA, BPA free and dishwasher-safe coconut water system to the hit ABC television show Shark Tank.  Although CocoVinny did not get what he set out to gain on the show, he truly believes that every setback is an opportunity.

Recently I had the opportunity to chat with CocoVinny about what inspired him to create CocoTaps, What he learned on Shark Tank, The Coco Love Bracelet and more.

Check out OJ&B's entire interview with CocoVinny below!

1. What inspired you to create Coco Taps?
CocoVinny: I had heard all the hype about coconut water. Tried it, hated it. The taste, that it was processed and packaged in plastic; everything just seemed wrong. Then I tried coconut water straight from the source and I was changed forever. I became obsessed with fresh coconuts. But after I broke an expensive knife and almost cut off my finger trying to open a coconut, I knew there had to be a better way. Coco Taps was born and from then on it was tapped and capped, baby.

2. How sustainable/eco-friendly is Coco Taps?
CocoVinny: Very! Sustainability and product integrity are cornerstones of our business. We have a patented system that eliminates the need for processing and wasteful packaging that is polluting our ecosystems. We earned our Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Zero Waste certification in 2018. All of the boxes that the coconuts come in are repurposed and used for deliveries. We have a new partnership with beyond GREEN LLC to introduce a new marine biodegradable, ocean-safe tap made from corn-based maize.

3. What did you learn from appearing on Shark Tank?
CocoVinny: I learned something that has driven us towards great success. Every setback is a setup for a comeback. I didn't love the Sharks’ questions and they probably didn't love my answers. The good news is I learned that just because the Sharks didn’t give us an offer, didn’t mean Coco Taps were not viable or destined for Coco-awesomeness.

4. Tell me about the Coco Love Bracelet
Coco Vinny: The Coco Love Bracelet is a collaboration with Lisa Minden from Purpose Stones. We designed a bracelet that represents health, wealth, happiness and CocoLove to keep people tapped into the earth’s good energy at all times. With every bracelet sold, we will plant 8 trees through a partnership with One Tree Planted. Super excited to hit our goal of planting 1 million trees!

Bonus Question: If you could secure Coco Taps to be sold anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
CocoVinny: Florida cruise ships and theme parks would be our CocoDream! The day we see all of our customers on vacation, both parents and kids using a zero-waste fun-filled coconut beverage will be the best day ever!
