On Tuesday, December 11, 2019 streaming giant Netflix made hearts across the world go "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" as it announced that it is working along side the Quintanilla Family to develop and produce Selena: The Series.

The scripted, two part limited series will be based on the life of the late yet legendary Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla-Perez as she "must make tough choices to hold onto family, true love and music" as per the shows official description.

"Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Moises Zamora of Star and American Crime will write the script as well as executive produce while Jamie Davila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Sirman A. Singh will serve as executive producers.

"Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage. Selena's career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can't imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family's lives." Jaime Dávila, president of Campanario Entertainment, said in a statement.

No casting, premire dates or episode length information was included in the announcement but I am extremely excited about this project!  I love that the family will be heavily involved and it honestly felt amazing to type so many latino/latinx names as executive producers and writers on this project. I am curious to see the similarities and differences in this story as compared to the 1997 film Selena starring and launching the career of Jennifer Lopez.  The movie came out just two years after Selena passed so I am curious to see if the family will feel more comfortable sharing more details for this project decades later.

I am Mexican-American just like Selena and it makes me so proud to see how she has united the world all these years after her passing in a time where it seems we need it the most. Sometimes people are confused as to my background and to make it easier I started telling them that I am just like Selena which they instantly understand.

The very short teaser from Netflix (see below) does not tell us much but still makes Selena fans around the world "Muy... EXCITED!"
