OJ&B In The Press: The Matagorda Advocate Interview's OJ&B!

I was thrilled that The Matagorda Advocate did an interview with me about Orange Juice and Biscuits and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! This was especially fun because this is one of the papers from my hometown of Bay City, TX! Thanks so much to Adriana Acosta and The Matagorda Advocate for featuring OJ&B. MUCH LOVE TO THE BAY!!

I Am Fashion: Bay City native blogs fashion week

For Jonathan Valdez fashion is everything.

The Bay City native is living his dream in New York City and blogging about his favorite subjects: celebrities and fashion.

His blog, Orange Juice and Biscuits, was voted one of the Top 5 blogs to follow in 2009 by Mashable, an Internet news site.

“I like to tease and not be rude,” he said. “I always say I am giving advice and telling it like it is.”

This year, Valdez was selected to be official media for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 show, to be held at the Lincoln Center in New York City, Sept. 9 through 16.

“This is such a great honor because not everyone gets approved for these credentials,” he said.

This is his second year as official media for the fashion show, and will be on the sidelines reporting with other fashion media like Elle and Vogue Magazine.

To be approved credentials, writing samples must be submitted.

“You never know what’s going to happen on fashion week,” he said. “But I will make sure to be the first to post online the latest information.”

Valdez will live tweet, take photos and review the latest fashion collections on his blog.

THE PERFORMING BUG

Valdez is a 2003 graduate of Bay City High School and was a member of the Dungeoneers, the speech and debate team.

“He left such a lasting impression,” said Magda Mirelez, theater teacher at Bay City High School.

As a Dungeoneer, Valdez competed in UIL Theater, improvisation and One Act plays, drama and solo singing.

“He was so fearless to do and play any role during competition as well as help out with props or anything else that needed to be done,” she added.

Mirelez, who keeps in contact with Valdez, said he is witty, fun and awesome.

After graduating from high school, Valdez attended Texas State University where he majored in communications studies and minored in Theater and Psychology.

While attending college, Valdez had the opportunity to have his own morning talk show, Orange Juice and Biscuits, which focused on fashion, pop culture and celebrity news.

“We named it that because we wanted a name that was unique, different and that it stood out,” he said.

The show was heard on campus twice a week for two hours and he covered fashion, celebrity news and music.

“This show gave me great experience and allowed me to edit interviews and create my own commercials,” he said.

Orange Juice and Biscuits was a popular morning show that allowed him to interview celebrities in several South By South West Music and Film festivals.

At the festival, he was able to do red carpet interviews and meet several celebrities like Rosario Dawson.

“I was also at another red carpet event where the Hollywood Reporter and New York Times Reporters were next to me,” he said.

With his popularity and fan base following, Valdez decided to continue his Orange Juice and Biscuits show, in online format.

“And that’s how my blog began,” he said.

THE BIG APPLE

Valdez dreamed of performing live theater in New York City and in 2009 he followed his dream.

This is the perfect place to be if you want to do theater or fashion, he said.

“This is where everything happens first,” he said.

Aside from being a fashion and celebrity blogger, Valdez also does freelance public relations.

Valdez blogger status has allowed him to reviewed fashion, beauty and cosmetic lines.

“I was at a Donna Karan Fashion show event and for a moment I had to step back and take it all in,” he said.

Valdez says he is glad he grew up in Bay City because it has allowed him to appreciate what he has accomplished.

“This city has a lot of diversity,” he said. “I came home every summer and worked at H-E-B,” he said.

Valdez enjoys coming home and visiting with family and friends.

Valdez hopes to continue blogging celebrity and fashion news as well as continue to review product lines and fashion shows.

He is currently working to get sponsors for his blog.

“I want to continue working on this industry whether it’s fashion public relations, social networking and blogging,” he said.

He hopes to be an inspiration to others.

“Always do what you are interested in,” he said. “Do what feels right and don’t compromise.”

Worked Her Dress Or Looked A Mess: The Golden Globes 2011!

I have literally been running all over the city lately planning amazing things for the future with OJ&B! I know this is a couple of days late but YOU KNOW I had to give my opinion on the globes gowns!

I was actually really pleased with the fashion at this year's Golden Globes. I feel like everyone stepped it up a notch and started caring about how they looked at award shows again.

No matter how good everyone looks we all know that there is always going to be a group of people looked like they got dressed in the dark with a stylist that was on some crazy that day. Because of this, I have divided up the gals in two groups: The ones who worked their dress and the ones who looked as mess!

These gals worked their dress:

Catherine Zeta-Jones is in the running to be my best dressed at the globes in this stunning forest green ballgown Monique Lhuillier. Monique has gorgeous dresses. I loved all of the green on the carpet this year!

This is proof that I I don't hate when someone does something right! I am not a huge Eva Longoria fan at all but there is no denying that she looked beyond gorgeous in this Zac Posen dress.

Emma Stone got and Easy A in this Calvin Klein situation. I usually do not like the minimal look but she rocked it! I hope she goes back to her red hair soon.

Christina Aguilera won me over in her lace and jet beaded Zuhair Murad dress. I love how it hinted to her movie Burlesque.

What's This? "A Dress" Says Who? "Calvin Klein!" Claire Danes looked all kinds of good her CK Dress. Calvin was having a major Globes moment.

These gals looked a mess:

Tilda Swinton looks like a sleepy nightgowned mess in this Jil Sander "dress."

Helena Bonham Carter at the Globes is going to be 2011's most popular Halloween costume! This is a Helenabomination!

Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf was just bad!! She is usually has such good style! I am going to blame this on the fact that she is a first time mom and did not know how to style her baby bump. Wearing a huge red glitter rose is not the answer EVER!

Julianna Margulies may be a Good Wife but this Yves Saint Laurent dress makes her look like a bad dresser. It is too plain and boring for an event like the globes! Give me glam!

Heidi Klum's Marc Jacob dress is another example of something that is not glam enough for the globes. This is more People's Choice awards appropriate.

"And that is all I have to say about that." -Forrest Gump

OJ&B In The Press: A Q&A With Texas State's University Star!

Texas State University's campus newspaper, The University Star, was kind enough to ask me to do a Q&A for their paper that starts off the Spring Semester. We discuss Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Fashion GPS, Tim Gunn, Whitney Port and more. Read the full Q&A below!

Q & A: Alumnus talks about Big Apple Living

By Jordan Gass-Poore'

As alumnus Jonathan Valdez boarded a plane from New York to Texas for the holidays a woman approached him with an affinity for orange juice and biscuits. The woman recognized him from one of the NYC parties Valdez had recently covered for his blog, Orange Juice and Biscuits. Valdez’s fan base reaches further than airport waiting areas. The Texas State alumnus has approximately 2,000 followers on Twitter. Valdez’s dream of having his own talk show came to fruition during a stint as a DJ, where he worked with alumna Adrienne Brown for a semester. Valdez and Brown hit it off and created the award-winning KTSW morning show, Orange Juice and Biscuits (Brown created the name). The pop culture-inspired show (and now blog) has provided Valdez the opportunity to interview countless celebrities. His move to The Big Apple last year has further advanced his reputation as an up-and-coming blogger and social media personality.

JG: Do you have any immediate events that you’re going to be attending when you get back to New York, or anything within the month?
JV: I have some events that I’m going to that aren’t anything too crazy. With that said, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for fall/winter 2011 happens in February, so I think that’s my big thing coming up.

JG: How was the (2010 Mercedes-Benz) spring/summer Fashion Week?
JV: Yeah, Spring/summer was awesome. It was the first time at Lincoln Center, and I think it really went off without a hitch. It’s a bigger venue, and I think it allowed for more people to attend, and they even used a lot more technology. So instead of, you know, the traditional publicist with a clipboard they had a thing called Fashion GPS. You could go in and your ID or press badge had a barcode, and you could scan it. Then all your shows, invites come up for that day and you could walk in and go. So it makes things a little bit easier, and it was interesting to be a part of the first group of media.

JG: Was the event better or worse than what you expected?
JV: I really had nothing to compare it to, because it was my first official fashion (week). I thought it was nice. I mean, they (organizers) were just saying that in such a huge venue that people are all over the place, but I liked exploring. To me it was awesome. All the big, huge players that you all hear about, they were all there.

JG: Who were some of the people that you were able to interview (during Fashion Week)? Did you meet anyone that you really wanted to meet?
JV: I had met a few people earlier in February at a Project Runway press event. I ran into Tim Gunn at Lincoln Center in the tents, and he’s always so nice. One of the big highlights, that I think a lot of the people would be interested in at Texas State, is that I got to meet Whitney Port and see her presentation. I thought that was really interesting just because she really has a collection. I was surprised at how much she actually cared about it. I overheard her telling the models just to have fun, smile and to be themselves. I have a picture with her. She seems very into her work.

JG: How were you able to obtain a press pass for Fashion Week?
JV: Well, every year they open up an application for media. It took about two or three months. You have to send in writing samples and your website. They check you out and make sure you’re legit. Not everyone gets the credentials. I know one person who has a bigger website than I do who did not obtain press passes. I was really honored to get into Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. You have to apply every year. I was telling one of the reporters Fashion Week reminds me so much of South by Southwest, just replace music with fashion.

JG: When you first moved to New York did you know anyone in New York City?
JV: I really didn’t know that many people when I moved to New York. Twitter helped me out. I had put on my Twitter that I lived in New York and Austin, even though I hadn’t left yet. I was tweeting about New York parties and fashion and a lot of people thought I lived in New York. There’s a website, Meetup.com, and I saw that there’s fashion people getting together, and I joined one of those parties, and I made friends that I’m still friends with.

JG: Anything you’d like to add?
JV: I’m in talks with some social media projects for other companies that I can’t really talk about, but we’ll see what happens. I’ll post it on the blog. It’s a really exciting time.

Special Thanks to Jordan Gass-Poore' for doing an amazing job with the Q&A. Check out the original post here.

Bambu Apparel: Graphic T's That Won't Shame You!

In a world of really really bad bedazzled, bejeweled and bedouched graphic t-shirts, Bambu Apparel brings a fun yet artsy and rocker feel to people who just want to pop.

Designer Sarah Saiger launched Bambu Apparel in 2009. Drawing inspiration from the original artwork of one of the world’s oldest brand, Bambu. Bambu Apparel revives a rich heritage of art and advertising dating back to the company’s inception in 1764.

Each line in the collection speaks to a story behind Bambu’s past crafted around Saiger’s vision of combining historic art and modern fashion. Saiger is widely considered an expert on Bambu’s history, artwork, and cultural significance as her grandfather purchased Bambu in 1985 and her grandmother manages the thriving rolling paper company out of the company’s Long Island headquarters.
Above: I love how each shirt looks like a work of art. You could actually frame them for some interesting conversation pieces in a den, work area or even a bathroom of your house or apartment. I love the shirt with the Royalty on it. It adds some fun drama to your tee collection.

I always like when fashion ties art and history together. I believe that you can make clothes wearable art even if there is no designs on them.

These shirts would make a fun addition to your weekend wear or they could give you that pop of flare, fun and inspiration at the gym. You could also pair them with vests, cardigans, jackets, blazers, etc.

You can be certain that these shirts are for people who want to have fun with their tees without rhinestones, tattoo designs and tigers, OH MY!

OJ&B EXCLUSIVE: Gossip Girl Jessica Szohr Launches New SoBe Lifewater With Electrolytes!

On Thursday, January 6, 2011 Gossip Girl star, Jessica Szohr, launched her brand new campaign pictures for SoBe Lifewater with electrolytes in New York City. Szohr, who plays Vanessa on the hit CW show, shed her inhibitions and unleashed her inner lizard while wearing nothing but a pair of SoBe Lifewater skinsuits during her photo shoot in Costa Rica. The sultry photo spread is the second installment of the SoBe Lifewater skinsuit series and will appear exclusively in the iconic Sports Illistruated Swimsuit Edition (work it Jessica)!

I had a chance to talk to Jessica at the launch party for the new Sobe Lifewater with electrolytes campaign in NYC. Jessica was one of the nicest actresses that I have ever met. It can't be easy mingling with a room full of strangers while giant pictures of you in a SoBe skinsuit inspired by the new Strawberry Kiwi Lemonade are all over the room, but she rocked it out!

"Last year's SoBe Lifewater skinsuit shoot took place on a gorgeous beach; this year's skinsuit shoot in the jungle was still amazing, but a little different. It definitely had an edgy vibe that I loved," said Szohr.

As far as Gossip Girl goes, Szohr tells OJ&B exclusively that she thinks Vanessa is ready for some new men in her life! "Vanessa doesn't want those boys... she needs a new man," joked the Wisconsin native.

Above: Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr wearing an Alice + Olivia top with a Diane von Furstenberg skirt with Orange Juice and Biscuits' Jonathan Valdez.

"The SoBe Lifewater skinsuit ads with Jessica Szohr prove that no matter what you're up to - taming the jungle in a skinsuit or hanging out with friends - new Sobe Lifewater with electrolytes offers you a great-tasting hydration without the calories," said Andrew Katz, marketing director for SoBe (I just booked several sultry jungle photo shoots so I guess I better pack my SoBe).

Congrats to Jessica Szohr and SoBe on a successful launch party for the new campaign! Time to go unleash your inner lizard!

VIDEO: Tom Ford Women's Collection Spring/Summer 2011

The fashion world is buzzing about the video of Tom Ford's Womens Collection for Spring/Summer 2011! This should come as no surprise as Mr. Ford, as he likes to be called, kept this show under lock and key. Until now, only the fashion elite knew the details of the show that took place in September.

I love that Mr. Ford is an old soul and like things to be done in an old fashioned sort of way. This show gives people a glimpse to the past when designers like Coco Chanel would debut collections in her apartment in Paris. Ford's show was intimate and only for those in the industry that truly needed to be there.

Famed fashion photographer, Terry Richardson, seemed to be the photog of choice for Ford's show capturing the gorgeous clothes on the models and celebrity cat walker, Beyonce (you can spot the gorgeous Solange Knowles in the front row cheering on her sister).

I love everything about what Mr. Ford did for this fashion show as it was just right for the breathtaking designs. My favorite has to be the blue fridge dress!

Take a look at the magical world of Mr. Ford!

Thank you for being brilliant Tom Ford!
