Ports 1961 Spring/Summer 2011: Now THAT Is What I Call A Fashion Show!

One of my FAVORITE shows that I saw at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was Ports 1961's Spring/Summer 2011 show! With a packed house and two runways keeping the stunning beauty and energy coming the entire time, Ports 1961 had me excited and smiling all at the same time. The models were absolutely stunning and the '70's inspired clothes looked incredible on the runway.

Let's take a look at some of my faves from the collection! So amazing!

I still cannot get over the models from the show. You had people like Freja Beha Erichsen strutting her stuff, but my absolute favorite was Magdalena Frackowiak. I actually asked myself during the show, "is every piece they put on her amazing or does she make every piece look amazing?" I was in love.

Spotted: Mary-Kate Olsen Having Fun At The Jane Hotel!

Last night while I was at one of my favorite places in New York City, The Jane Hotel, I spotted none other than super chic celebrity designer and A-list NYC socialite, Mary-Kate Olsen.

MKO was seated at one of the chic tables in the ballroom with a group of friends and it looked like she was having a great time! She would occasionally move to the music a bit while remaining seated and played with a fedora that she would take on and off. She keeps it low key yet still seems to have fun with her friends. I love that she keeps it classy and does not go cray cray on table tops!

I was having a ton of fun moving to the music as well and I think MKO glanced my way a time or two (at least I would like to think she did)! I have so much respect for what she has done with her sister Ashley on their clothing lines, The Row and Elizabeth and James. One of my of my dreams is to go to their showroom to look at the collection and get to interview them for OJ&B! Hopefully it will happen with time!

OJ&B Takes First Trip To The Spa!

Spa Week is HERE! It is time to get you life together, destress and not look a mess!

Spa Week means $50 spa treatments at some of the best spas in NYC and around the country from October 11-17. Some spas are already all booked up, so make your appointments STAT! All the participating spas and $50 treatments are listed on Spaweek.com. Even if you are ballin' on a budget, $50 to relax and unwind is totally a value!

I just had a facial courtesy of SpaWeekDaily.com at Tribeca Beauty Spa. I was extremely nervous to go because I had heard mixed reviews about facials hurting. Also, you always feel a bit off being a man and going to the spa. You can find out all about my first spa trip by clicking on this link to Spa Week Daily: Man's First Spa Day and Facial

I highly recommend Tribeca Beauty Spa for Spa Week, or anytime. They're offering the following 3 treatments for $50: 45 Min Dream Massage, 45 Min Signature Tribeca Facial, or 45 Min The Brazilian Goddess Wax with Express Tribeca Pedicure.

For all my trendy New Yorkers... Spa Week also recently released a list of the Top 12 Hottest Spa Treatment Trends for Fall 2010. It's really interesting to learn that the spa lifestyle stretches far beyond the basic massage and facial. Reiki, Botox on the go, Vatooing (turning your private parts into the Sistine Chapel) and more. Go ahead, spa like there's no tomorrow! Check it out; here's the New York Spa Trend Report which lists all the places to go for these trendy treatments in NYC.

P.S. Why has OJ&B not talked about Vatooing?! Imma need you to get your life together because that is just taking it to an entirly new level of hoochie haha! Happy Spa Week from OJ&B!

Duckie Brown Spring/Summer 2011

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Duckie Brown designers Steven Cox and Daniel Silver walk the runway during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2011 Official Coverage at Lincoln Center on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

My very first official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show that was actually held in the tents was Duckie Brown's Spring/Summer 2011 collection. I was very excited to see Duckie Brown because I was all about their Fall/Winter 2010 collection!

The collection started of strong with long lines and oversized pieces that seem to be the "it" trend for men for S/S 11. I really liked what I saw during the first half of the show.

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Models walk the runway at the Duckie Brown Spring 2011 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at The Stage at Lincoln Center on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images for IMG)

Above: Longer lines and oversized menswear for Duckie Brown S/S 11. Below: As the models finished their walk down the runway they would gather on the other side of the seats for the audience to see.

As the collection marched on the color started to come out and everyone knows I LOVE color. The question that I have to ask is this- How do we feel about drop-crotch pants on men (on anyone really)? I saw them in Duckie Brown's S/S 11 and several other collections as well. I think they look a bit like ninja pants or as Anna Farris in The House Bunny put it,"Looks like someone went accident in their sexy pants." I have seen maybe two people pull them off but please tell me your thoughts!

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: A model walks the runway at the Duckie Brown Spring 2011 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at The Stage at Lincoln Center on September 10, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Jemal Countess/Getty Images for IMG)

So even though not everyone can do a hot pink drop-crotch pant on the streets, I can still appreciate the artistic value of them in a runway show. I was still on board with the show but then things started to get really cray cray! I mean like if LaLoca Lohan was styling someone to look very MKO while her scram bracelet was going off cray cray! Now I am not saying that the pieces individually were bad but the way all of the very busy patterns were styled together made them hard to read.

You cannot HONESTLY say that if you walked out of the house like these two, your friends and your Mama would not be like go back inside and get dressed for real!

I just did not know what was going on or what I was suppose to be looking at. It was very Bananas In Pajamas chic. If you take the pieces apart you might be able to do something with them but you can't just walk out of the house looking crazy!

Above: This is was it would look like if Anna Wintour was a cholo.

I would totally rock some of those jackets and even some of the shirts a part from all of other craziness. Duckie Brown, I will always love you! I expect to see some hot styling for Fall/Winter 2011!

OJ&B Meets Whitney Port at Whitney Eve Spring/Summer 2011 Presentation!

I have been saying for the longest time that OJ&B and I really need to be on a reality show! This fashion week I came pretty close to it at Whitney Port's Spring/Summer presentation for her clothing line Whitney Eve. Port, who is the star of MTV's The City by way of The Hills, was right in the thick of her presentation held at Industria Studios in the Meatpacking District as she made sure that the clothes were on her models to her liking and that her models were having a good time.

Above: Whitney Port being hands on with her Spring/Summer 2011 collection. "Just be loose and have fun." was some advice that I overheard Port give to one of her models.

I overheard Whitney being very concerned that her models were having fun and was nice enough to return smiles to those who were watching her do her thing. She may or may not have been filming for another season of The city as there were cameras and boom mics galore.

The Whitney Eve S/S 11 collection showed a mix of menswear inspired jackets and pants that were still feminine and flirty as well as girly dresses that packed a punch in sherbert orange and pale pinks that are perfect for spring. There were a lot of oranges, pinks, reds, and red-oranges shown this Fashion Week (everyone wants to celebrate their love for OJ&B). It seems that the the color trends bounced right off the make up and nails color trend from this spring/summer and right onto the clothes for S/S 11.

Above: Menswear inspired looks from Whitney Eve S/S 11. Below: Feminine dresses in fun colors.

In the entire presentation there were two models that really stood out from all the other girls that were showing off the clothes. They were both totally working it and being fierce the entire time, especially when a camera or camera phone was pointed in their direction. One had an amazing look and the other totally dominated with her Olsen-esque appeal.

Above: This girl was super fierce and I told her that she was amazing! Below: This girl was working the shades and her inner Olsen occasionally playing with her hair and having a just-another-day attitude about her. I love it!

Congrats to Whitney for a really beautiful collection! Let me know when you need me to be on The City as the resident fashion blogger. What Whit? You say you need drama? Well... there were whispers from some people in the crowd not believing that Port actually designs the collection. I am sure they are just haters though because I totally believe that you do! There, Dramz! HAHA.

Above: Lights, camera, Whitney! Port with some of her special guests. Recognize any of them from the show?

"Fashion Party" By Das Racist

My good friend Mairin Heard just told me about Das Racist and their song 'Fashion Party.' I thought it was the perfect thing to listen post Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!

Mairin is one of the hosts of "The Party Line with BC and Merch" which is an online radio show based in Austin, Texas. She is always telling me bout fun songs!

When I was researching 'Fashion Party' I noticed that a ton of people had been searching for this song because apparently it plays in Urban Outfitter stores (this means that it is hipster approved like whoa). Have a listen and tell me what you think. I have a feeling you will love it, especially if you actually go to fashion parties. ENJOY!

OJ&B In The Press: Alumnus blogs his way to fashion fame

Texas State University's campus newspaper, The University Star, did an exclusive interview with me about OJ&B, my move to NYC and being press at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Read the article below!

Alumnus blogs his way to fashion fame

By Jovonna Owen

Gone are the days when front row seats at fashion shows were exclusively occupied by starlets, socialites and the powers-that-be in mainstream media.

Jonathan Valdez, Texas State alumnus, is taking the fashion world by storm and occupying those coveted seats on the runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week spring/summer 2011.

Valdez is the brains behind Orange Juice and Biscuits, an entertainment and fashion blog that started out as a KTSW radio program.

Valdez’s show saw success with numerous awards in broadcasting and was nominated for the Top 10 Radio Morning Show by Austin360.com.

Valdez used that success as a springboard, moving to New York City after graduating in Aug. 2009 to pursue a lifelong dream of being a fashion and entertainment journalist.

Valdez said there is a change in the way people are getting news content.

“People are news junkies, everyone wants their info now,” Valdez said. “Blogging is so immediate. I can upload pics and it’s online that day, not a week later in US Weekly.”

The road to success was not always smooth.

Valdez changed his major to communication studies after failing the Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation test required for mass communications majors.

“I failed the GSP three times,” Valdez said. “I didn’t give up on not being in journalism.”

Valdez credits Laurie Fluker, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, for mentoring him through the difficult situation.

“The (degree) doesn’t matter as much as what’s in your heart,” Fluker said. “I always tell my students to follow their passion.”

Valdez said it was not all glitz and glamour when he first arrived in the city.

“I lived in a three bedroom apartment in Brooklyn with two other people,” Valdez said. “There was one radiator to heat the whole apartment. I was freezing.”

Fluker is not surprised at Valdez’s success in New York.

“He has that ‘Je ne sais quoi’ — that edge about him that makes him want to do the unusual,” Fluker said.

Mandy Dugan, Texas State alumna, co-hosted the KTSW radio program with Valdez before his departure to New York City.

Dugan said it did not take long for Valdez to take over the big apple.

“In a couple of months he already had friends in the fashion world, a blog and was covering great events in the city,” Dugan said.

Orange Juice and Biscuits was voted one of the “Top 5 Best Bloggers to Follow” in 2009 by Mashable.com.

Valdez is no stranger to fashion week, previously covering the Donna Karan fall 2010 collection and rubbing elbows with fashion elites such as Anna Wintour, Rachel Zoe and Demi Moore.

Valdez keeps his ear to the street covering up-and-coming fashion couturiers.

“Indie designers doing their own thing is a lot more inspiring than some of the bigger collections,” Valdez said.

Valdez is hoping to take his brand to the next level.

“I want to be the pop culture and fashion expert commentator on fashion shows or at the VMAs and Oscars,” Valdez said. “I want people to be like ‘What would Jonathan of Orange Juice and Biscuits say?’”

Special thanks to The Univeristy Star and Jovanna Owen for doing a write up on Orange Juice and Biscuits! Also, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to Dr. Laurie Fluker and Mandy Dugan for saying such wonderful things about me! That was very sweet of both of you!

Texas State University Does Exclusive Interview With OJ&B!

I am very honored that my Alma Mater, Texas State University-San Marcos, did a story about me and Orange Juice and Biscuits at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011! You can read the article in its entirety below.

Alumnus carves unique niche on national fashion scene

By T.C. Sprencel
University News Service
September 8, 2010

Jonathan Valdez and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

A new dawn is breaking in the fashion blogging world, and Texas State University-San Marcos alumnus Jonathan Valdez is serving up the most important meal of the day.

On the table is Orange Juice and Biscuits, Valdez’s award-winning fashion and pop culture blog that has garnered a spot at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 show, to be held at the Lincoln Center in New York City, Sept. 9-16.

Valdez earned a seat at fashion’s premier event after being approved for official press credentials by global entertainment and production company IMG. The month-long approval process required Valdez to submit writing samples and prove his status as creator, writer and editor of Orange Juice and Biscuits.

“I was really honored,” says Valdez. “Not everyone gets approved for these credentials.”

While at Texas State, the Bay City native co-hosted Orange Juice and Biscuits, a KTSW morning talk show that focused on fashion and pop culture. Encouraged by fans to continue after graduation, Valdez turned the hit show into a blog in August 2009, three months after completing his degree in communication studies. He has been hard at work, catering to a rapidly growing fan base and building a fashion journalism brand, ever since.

“As far as the writing and content, I do all of that,” Valdez says, noting that his blog is equal parts work and passion.

“You have to filter out what would be perfect for your audience. When I go to an event I’m working, networking, covering the story. It’s a whole editorial process.”

Valdez’s success — he was named a “Top 5 Best Blogger to Follow” for 2009 by Internet news site Mashable.com — represents a changing landscape in the world of fashion journalism. Traditional media institutions are increasingly giving way to new media journalists who, given the advantages of Web publishing, provide more specialized content at a much faster pace. This massive power shift has caused some turbulence in the industry.

“A lot of these people have worked 20 or 30 years to get that front row seat at an event, and all of a sudden these young, witty bloggers pop up at fashion shows," he says. “Some editors don’t consider them real press.”

Things have gone smoothly nonetheless for Valdez, who states matter-of-factly that “the hierarchy is slowly dying.”

“Everybody has been really positive for me, and I’m going to continue to do my own thing,” he says.

Judging by reader response, Valdez is doing a good job at doing his own thing, even as his profession is undergoing a complete transformation. At the dawn of a new day in fashion journalism, Jonathan Valdez is giving readers the juiciest scoop on the Web.

Special thanks to Texas State University-San Marcos and T.C. Sprencel for the extremely well written article. I am so pleased and impressed with how it turned out!

Exclusive Photo: Matt Bomer And Hilarie Burton Spotted Filming On NYC Streets!

As I was coming back from getting my press credentials for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week I spotted Matt Bomer and Hilarie Burton filming a street scene for their USA Network television show, White Collar, on West 66th and Broadway. This marks the first time that I saw a television series being tapped in the city! The only reason I noticed was because I almost walked onto the set. Luckily they had guys advising people to go around. OOPS!

At first I as not aware of what show was being tapped. By the looks of the wardrobe I swore it was the Gossip Girl, but to my disappointment it was not! I think Hilarie looked great with the red hair and her wardrobe looked amazing! It almost made me forget that she was a V.J. On MTV (I still really wanted her to introduce the #5 video and then have everyone scream like there is no tomorrow). It was great to see the street walking extras as well and I was tempted to grab a snack off of the not-so-well-guarded craft services table!

Exciting stuff is already going on and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has just begun! Stay tuned for all of the exciting coverage or Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week right here on OJ&B!!

OJ&B Foox Around With Art!

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit artist, David Foox, at his studio space at One State Street in New York City. I love seeing where people work, especially when they are artists, because the space can tell you so much about their process and inspiration. Foox shares the space with a number of very talented individuals like fashion designer, Ocie Collins III, who had some of the most amazing jackets that I had every seen (I would not mind being seen in one for Fashion Week)! Ocie even works closely with Michael K. Williams who will be paying "Chalky White" in HBO's new series Boardwalk Empire. Platinum record music producers slash DJs Mysto and Pizzi also share the somewhat post apocalyptic space that would be many creative people's dream space.

Artist David Foox, who goes by his last name of Foox, invited me and OJ&B to be the VERY FIRST person to see his newest piece of art for the The International Museum of Surgical Science In Chicago, Illinois. He will be a part of a group art instillation called, Street Anatomy, which opened at the museum on September 3, 2010. Foox contributed a 4 foot tall hand painted sculpture that is a replica of a toy line that he creates to symbolize organ donors.

Foox has been raising awareness for organ donation for the last three years. A family member had received a double lung transplant and now is a healthy person who plays tennis and golf. Foox says that it is a cause that he strongly believes in and also goes with his "weird" nature.

One series that Foox is very proud of is "The Fifth Letter" which is a series of 13 currency sized prints with one released each month. So far Foox has created, "Fortune", "Fame", and "Faith." Faith was just released on September 1st and in October, November, and December "Fate", "Fantasy", and "Freedom" will join "The Fifth Letter" series. The great thing about this series is each piece has a limited amount available to purchase. "Faith" will have only 80 prints and Foox gives people the opportunity to pick what number they would like in the series.

Foox's art has been seen all over the world and is truly making his way as a great modern artist. He also believes in being positive and is one of the friendliest people that I have met in the city which I always enjoy! OJ&B wishes Foox the best of luck and cannot wait to see what happens next for him.

OH WHAT A NIGHT! Rolando Santana Hosted Orange Juice And Biscuits 1st Birthday Party!

On Tuesday, August 31, 2010 fashion designer, Rolando Santana hosted Orange Juice and Biscuits' 1st Birthday Party at his midtown design studio.

Rolando Santana's midtown design studio was packed with well wishers, supporters, friends and fans of OJ&B! The word was out that the OJ&B's birthday bash was going to be hot as it was featured on New York City social and party website Guestofaguest.com that night in their "pick of the night's top events."

Above: A screen shot from Guestofaguest.com naming OJ&B's 1st Birthday Party as one of the night's top events and hot parties!

Guest enjoyed amazing cupcakes by OJ&B favorite, Crumbs Bake Shop, as well as munching on the official snack of every single fab event in NYC, Popchips. When you have fab snacks you need a fab bev to go with it and luckily 1947 Beer provided their delicious brew for OJ&B's guest.

Above: What is a party without tasty Crumbs Cupcakes and Popchips?! Below: Guests were LOVING the 1947 Beer. "I don't usually like beer, but I love this," was a statement that I heard often!

As guests were mingling, tingling, snacking away and getting photographed by Leo Alexander, Sarah Charness took the party to an entirely different level with her fierce fluorescent pink seven-string electric violin. She literally impressed everyone at the party! After Sarah performed it was time for the amazing Official Hank to sing his song, 'Life on Stage.' Hank did an amazing job and filled the room with his vocals and charmed the crowd as per usual. I cannot thank these two enough for bringing down the house with their talent!!
